Near Field Communication – Long Term Opportunity with Triple Digit Growth Prospects

Near Field Communication (NFC) adoption is slow today because due to the lack of supporting
infrastructure, technical standards, cooperation among value chain participants, and market misperceptions. There is a host of different companies involved in the NFC value chain, each with their own interest, roles and business models. There is also a great deal of uncertainty as to how a globally-accepted NFC business model will be defined and implemented, as several stakeholders are “competing” for control of the ever-expanding markets for non-cash transactions.
The global market for NFC solutions was valued at more than $10M in 2007, with approximately 61,000 NFC-enabled devices shipped. According to recent research, VDC predicts the total global NFC solutions market to grow at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 143% through 2012, when it is expected to exceed $877 million in revenues.
“In a too-familiar Catch-22,” cites Louis Bianchin, Senior Analyst of VDC’s AIDC/RFID Practice, “NFC device end users are limited as to where they can use it, while enterprises are not investing heavily into the technology because they feel that there is a limited supply of NFC-enabled devices and users.”
The integration of the technology into a merchant’s establishment will be based upon reliably achieving a number of objectives, including improving the customer’s experience, buiilding brand loyalty, increased operational efficiencies/automation, and the potential of increasing revenues.
Convenience for the consumer will be a primary driver for adoption. End users are expected to benefit from the technology by having multiple cards managed on a single device, reduced time for checkout and transactions, as well as other value-added services such as being able to receive and store a transaction log or ticket. The level of security is the same as used with most credit cards, and the integration of transactions leveraging a PIN code is expected to significantly improve security, thus easing consumer concerns regarding theft or fraud.

Tagsys White RFID Button Tag for Personal Garments

Tagsys has released the ARIO 370L-HL RFID tag, whose unique button-like design improves service levels for businesses such as elder care facilities and hospitals. The ARIO 370L-HL's white casing enables the tag to be sewn discretely onto light-colored items. By attaching it directly to laundered items guarantees garments will be returned to the proper owners.
"The ARIO 370L-HL tag is the product we've been waiting for to address the needs of our nursing home clients", said Guy Burtschell, General Manager of Actiprint. "This 'button' tag is ideal for garment applications because of its small size, and it enables us to efficiently track items throughout the laundering process and accurately return personal garments to the correct residents."
The ARIO 370L-HL's innovative two-hole architecture quickly enables the tag to be sewn on garments either manually or automatically using most sewing machines without compromising its durability. Each ARIO 370L-HL is guaranteed to survive 200+ washing cycles to ensure durability and high performance throughout the life of the garment. Together with the ARIO 370L-DL, the ARIO 370L-HL are part of TAGSYS' ISO 15693 encapsulated tag family - uniquely designed to withstand extreme humidity, temperature, pressure and chemical applications. Measuring 15.5mm in diameter at a thickness of 2.8mm, the ARIO 370L-HL and ARIO 370L-DL can be used together to effectively track garments throughout the laundering cycle.
"The introduction of the ARIO 370L-HL is a perfect example of how RFID can benefit not only businesses but individuals as well", said Fred Kohout, TAGSYS Chief Marketing Officer. "Where RFID has typically been used to increase the efficiency of commercial operations, products such as the ARIO 370L-HL go a step further by delivering value-added services to the individual user as well."
In addition to the encapsulated tag family, TAGSYS recently introduced a product portfolio designed to support the rigorous and rugged requirements found only in the textile supply and service markets.
Both the Medio L400 reader and textile services antenna series are designed for the rugged industrial applications found within processing plants. Each product is tested and tuned to accurately track various types of items - ranging from stacked linens to hanging uniforms. The Medio L400 delivers industry-leading performance with processing speeds up to six times faster and 40% greater read ranges than earlier TAGSYS readers.
The latest release of TAGSYS' best-selling tunnel line, the TS400, seamlessly integrates RFID technology with existing factory automation equipment and processes. The TS400 can simultaneously read bulked or stacked items up to two times faster than the previous generation of tunnels, allowing operators to maintain traditional line speeds used in textile plants. Performance accuracy is achieved through a patented three dimensional antenna architecture that provides 99.90%+ accurate read rates.
TAGSYS' also offers software called e-connectware to manage global RFID networks. e-connectware remotely manages and optimizes RFID networks in real-time, and delivers high-quality service levels to ensure data accuracy and integrity for tagged items.

Sunsweet Growers Streamlines Fruit Tracking With Motorola Mobile Solution

The Enterprise Mobility business of Motorola and RedLine Solutions, a systems integrator and Motorola Business partner, specializing in bar code, radio frequency (RF) and advanced data capture systems, are helping Sunsweet Growers, Inc. deploy an end-to-end mobility solution at its 23-acre, Yuba City, Calif., headquarters. Sunsweet, the world's largest handler of dried tree fruits, worked with RedLine Solutions’ integration team to deploy Motorola’s rugged MC9090 mobile computers, VC5090 vehicle-mount mobile computers, LS3408ER scanners, WS5100 wireless switches and AP300 access ports to help increase inventory efficiency and labor savings, reduce truck-load time and improve visibility into real-time production.
“The Motorola implementation quickly improved our visibility into real-time production,” said Harold Upton, vice president of strategic business processes, Sunsweet Growers. “We’ve shifted our production reporting from the end of the shift to track product as it comes off the line. Our managers now have greater visibility into how well individual lines are producing on a daily basis, and we have increased our shipping efficiency.”
Sunsweet was tracking finished goods in quantity, but not by storage location in its warehouse, which created inventory discrepancies and inefficiencies in finding and pulling products for shipment. It had already deployed SAP ERP inventory management solutions to replace legacy systems and plans to expand the solution to include the SAP warehouse management module. Sunsweet selected Motorola’s enterprise mobility solution for its warehouse based on the proven reliability, flexibility and durability of its products and Motorola’s relationship with SAP.
Sunsweet deployed an end-to-end Motorola wireless environment implemented by RedLine Solutions to check inventory, perform cycle counts and check problems. Forty Motorola wireless access points and both a primary and a redundant wireless switch have been installed, as well as Motorola’s LS3408ER extended range bar code scanner which has enabled fork lift drivers to reliably scan pallets from as close as four inches and as far away as 45 feet. Sunsweet had a project objective of 10-percent labor savings, which has already been achieved.
“The combination of Motorola’s wireless infrastructure and rugged mobile computers with RedLine’s expertise in deployment and implementations provide enterprise customers with a reliable and cost-efficient mobility solution,” said Jerry McNerney, senior director of transportation, distribution & logistics solutions group, Motorola's Enterprise Mobility business. “With industry-leading products, Motorola continues to help companies like Sunsweet streamline processes, improve operational efficiencies and reduce labor costs.”
As a result of the success experienced by the Yuba City warehouse, Sunsweet is currently working with RedLine to expand the same Motorola wireless infrastructure to its Fleetwood, Pa., warehouse. Sunsweet has also increased the benefits of the Motorola wireless infrastructure by using it as the backbone for wireless laptops, establishing virtual LANs and isolating office traffic from warehouse traffic for security and routing purposes. RedLine Solutions is involved with all stages of the wireless solution implementation; from equipment recommendation and selection, through site surveys, device staging, test and physical installation.
“RedLine’s depth of expertise in implementation efficiency and security, combined with the robust performance and reliability of Motorola’s wireless infrastructure, bar code scanners and mobile computers, provides customers like Sunsweet with unparalleled solutions that increase productivity while improving the bottom line,” said Todd Baggett, CEO of RedLine Solutions, Inc. “If companies are questioning whether or not their business could benefit from deploying a wireless infrastructure, they need not look any further than Sunsweet for an answer.”

Identec Solutions Technology Utilized to Safeguards Lives

As the third largest integrated energy company in the US and the fifth largest refiner in the world, ConocoPhillips required a system for its platforms within the Ekofisk Complex, on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, that would be both unfailing and effective during any possible emergency situation. Due to the complex nature of ConocoPhillips offshore work environments, selecting a system that protected valuable lives while at same time meeting the exceptionally stringent certification criteria necessary proved challenging. It was further essential that employees were assured that their privacy would not be compromised or in conflict with the Privacy Act.
"Today we are using the technology as an aid to locate offshore personnel on Ekofisk in the event of an emergency or during training." States Emil Anderson, ConocoPhillips project IT manager in the spring issue of Offshore.no when discussing IDENTEC SOLUTIONS' WATCHERSYSTEM solution. "It should also be noted that several other operators in the North Sea will soon be installing this system."
IDENTEC SOLUTIONS WATCHERSERIES technology offers a complete solution for tracking personnel in environments where access to real time employee information during an emergency situation is vital. Designed specifically for remote and isolated locations, IDENTEC SOLUTIONS technology plays an instrumental role in employee safety, with most unions and personnel embracing the significantly enhanced safety efforts.
All IDENTEC SOLUTIONS WATCHERSERIES technology has been rigorously tested and received the necessary ATEX Certification. Due to the possible volatile environmental nature of mining and offshore environments, obtaining certification required a meticulous and intensive testing process prior to releasing the technology.
"The ConocoPhillips contract emphasizes IDENTEC SOLUTIONS' position as a leading provider of complete RFID solutions within the oil, gas and mining industries," states Gerhard Schedler, CEO & President, IDENTEC SOLUTIONS. "Our WATCHERSERIES technology is further evidence of IDENTEC SOLUTIONS commitment to delivering solutions that set the standard and stand at the forefront of our industry."
All employees are provided with an active RFID tag which they carry similarly to an ID tag. A map of the facility and a real-time headcount is available for reference in the event of an emergency. In addition, readers are installed at all mustering stations, allowing point coordinators real-time access and overview of any missing personnel.
The result of the IDENTEC SOLUTIONS installation is enhanced operational efficiency, when dealing with employee safety and security. ConocoPhillips now has a real-time headcount of all their employees, efficient and safe entry and exit at all points, and significant time reduction when accounting for employees. Additionally strict regulations dictate the regular practise of evacuation drills on all offshore platforms which can be a time consuming and cumbersome effort. The IDENTEC SOLUTIONS WATCHERSERIES system offers real-time information so that the safe evacuation of personnel can be quickly verified during evacuation training.

Honeywell Dolphin 9900 – A Rugged Design for the Industrial Mobile Worker

Honeywell has recently launched its new Dolphin® 9900 Mobile Computer to help ensure intuitive use, reliability and enhanced productivity for workers in the field. The Dolphin 9900 combines the latest data collection, communication, and location-based technologies with an ergonomic and durable design.
With integrated voice and data communication, GPS and advanced Adaptus® Imaging Technology for barcode scanning and picture taking, the Dolphin 9900 lets businesses stay connected with their employees, supply chain and customers more effectively and more efficiently.
“Coming off the tremendous worldwide success of its predecessor, the Dolphin 9500, our target customer for the Dolphin 9900 are businesses that value a mobile computing platform with the latest technologies as well as comfortable and reliable use for the mobile worker all day long,” said Greg Payne, Manager of Product Marketing, Mobility Systems, Honeywell Imaging and Mobility. “While many manufacturers have migrated to less durable PDA-like solutions, the Dolphin 9900 class of product is being adopted across all core vertical segments, including transportation, retail, warehousing, logistics and healthcare. The 9900 fills a significant customer requirement for a device built specifically to serve applications in harsh environments that require high levels of both barcode scanning and keypad data entry. Additionally, the Dolphin 9900 delivers full Shift Plus™ battery performance—10+ hours—virtually eliminating the need to replace batteries during most work shifts. You simply cannot find this optimized balance of performance, durability and ease of use from any other mobile computing manufacturer.”
The Dolphin 9900 is Honeywell’s first solution that enables customers to capitalize on the company’s lifecycle strategy for backwards compatibility. This platform allows customers using the Dolphin 9500 to migrate to the next-generation Dolphin 9900 while keeping much of their legacy infrastructure—accessories, batteries and device peripherals—in place, creating the potential for significant cost savings. Additionally, user interaction with the Dolphin 9900 is nearly identical to that of its predecessor, reducing or eliminating requirements for user training and easing the migration of software applications onto the new device.
“Our goal is to earn customers for life,” said Garrison Gomez, Director of Product Marketing, Honeywell Imaging and Mobility. “A major part of that strategy is creating a lifecycle model that makes it easy for a customer to upgrade to a next-generation solution. Through interface similarity and backwards compatibility with our previous generation device, we can help make migrating to the latest technology a less costly and less resource-intensive process for customers.”
The industrial-grade Dolphin 9900 is built to be an extremely reliable solution with a highly rugged design and advanced power management technology to ensure uninterrupted performance in heavy-use environments. Specifications include an IP64 rating, 5-foot drops to concrete and testing to withstand more than 2,000 3-foot tumbles.
The Dolphin 9900’s computing architecture is powered by Microsoft Windows Mobile 6 with an Intel® PXA 270 624 MHz processor with 256MB RAM x 1GB FLASH memory to ensure fast performance in data intensive applications. An integrated Wi-Fi certified 802.11b/g radio delivers real-time network access to mission-critical information and supports advanced wireless security standards.
The Dolphin 9900 is Cisco CCX v4 certified and offers multi-mode wireless connectivity (GSM/GPRS, WLAN and Bluetooth).
“Windows Mobile enables businesses to mobilize their workforces and equip them with the applications they need to optimize productivity in the field,” said Scott Horn, general manager of the Mobile Communications Business, Microsoft Corp. “The Dolphin 9900 is a great example of a mobile device that leverages our software to empower industrial mobility customers with powerful customer service-enhancing capabilities.”

Handheld Scanners – Solid Growth but Still Room for More

Amid a turbulent world economy, the handheld bar code scanner market continued to exhibit solid growth in a vertical markets and across all regions.
This is according to the latest Venture Development Corportion (VDC) report. “While the handheld scanner, like many other AIDC technologies, continued to move toward commoditization last year, the handheld scanner industry continued to exhibit strong growth in 2007. In fact, the falling price of handheld scanner hardware actually opened opportunities among less-penetrated bar code end-user populations, compensating somewhat for an undulating global economy,” Kevin M. Permenter, Analyst of VDC’s AIDC Practice.
This resiliency is due, in part, to the proliferation of handheld scanners into new and interesting markets within the health care and commercial services sectors. While these sectors currently represent only $123 million of the handheld bar code market, these markets are expected to collectively grow over 9% through 2012, approaching $190 million.
Handheld bar code scanner adoption within the health care sector continues to be driven by rising costs (i.e., insurance) and the need to reduce medical errors. The benefits to these facilities include a significant decrease in shrinkage, improved asset utilization and management, less budget strains, improved operational efficiencies and a sharp decrease of medical errors. Continually in the public ‘spotlight,’ health care facilities are increasingly turning to lightweight handheld bar code technologies to resolve many of their issues.
Within the commercial sector, handheld scanners are utilized to increase productivity and efficiency in a variety of sub-verticals such as legal services, educational institutions, and hospitality. For example, many legal firms now use PDF417 2D bar codes to track document chain of custody in order to meet tightening mandates. In addition, public schools and universities benefit from bar code’s ability to track student attendance and spending via bar code scanners. Meanwhile, entertainment organizations such as casinos, hotels, and stadiums utilize handheld scanners and 2D bar codes to track inventory, expedite access, reduce paper-ticketing cost and curb counterfeiting for patrons.
